Campbell & Co. was
established in the village of Beauly in 1858, a family concern
now in its fourth generation. It specialises in designing tweeds
suitable for sport and country wear, and has its own tailoring
staff, not only for the making of sporting suits, but also for
more formal wear, ladies' wear, and Highland Dress.
It is becoming more and more difficult to find traditional
bespoke tailoring, but Campbells are fortunate to have the
skills of Mr. Tom Owen who followed on when his father retired
in 1985. Mr. Owen trained as a cutter in Glasgow and
worked with his father who had his own business there until he
moved to Beauly in 1967. The Owen family have kept
on the tradition of long service which seems to be the norm at
Campbells. All the staff both in the tailoring department
and in the shop, have been with the firm for a minimum of twelve
years, apart from the youngest member, our apprentice tailoress,
who started her training twelve months ago when she left school.
Sporting tweeds form an important part of the large selection of
tweed kept in stock. Some of the designs are woven
specially, and can only be obtained from the Highland Tweed
House, but the ranges in stock include tweeds of various weights
from a number of mills. There is also a wide variety of ladies'
tweeds which are obtained largely from Border mills.
Some Sporting Estates have their own private tweeds for the use
of their owners and employees. It is good to note that the
custom has been revived by many of the smaller estates which
have changed hands over the last 20-25 years, and Campbell & Co.
supply some of these.
In addition of the large range of ladies' and men's tweeds,
Campbell & Co. stock finest quality knitwear in Cashmere and
Lambs wool, and many items such as Cashmere or Wool scarves,
tweed hats, gloves, men's stockings, tartan or check travel rugs
make excellent gifts.
